One of the major drivers of growth at Polykar is environmental sustainability, or development that utilizes the earth’s resources in a way that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising those of the future. As Polykar strongly believes in protecting our planet, its products and practices take environmental protection into consideration:

Polykar’s lines of black garbage bags and clear tinted garbage bags are all ECOLOGO® Certified. The ECOLOGO CCD-126 certification helps to protect the environment by adopting the following requirements:

  • The bags must not be manufactured in a way that will render them technically non-recyclable
  • The bags must contain at least 20% post-consumer waste, 10% of which is household post-consumer waste

ECOLOGO is a third-party, multi-attribute eco-labeling program approved by the Global Ecolabelling Network, an international association of eco-labeling programs, as meeting the ISO 14024 standard. Originally formed in 1988 by the Canadian Federal Government,  ECOLOGO is now one of the most recognizable eco-labels in North America. For more information, please visit

ISO 14001

Polykar has been certified ISO 14001 for environmental management since 2003. This international norm, designed to assist companies in reducing their negative impact on the environment, is based on a principle of continuous improvement.

Polykar’s new production facility is a LEED” (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified building with Silver Certification status. LEED is an internationally recognized environmental certification for buildings and was created to define a universal standard for “green buildings” while promoting the benefits of environmental design and construction.

LEED Canada was developed in 2003 and uses the same criteria as the original LEED to rate its buildings:

  • Location and planning
  • Regional priority
  • Water, heating, and energy efficiency
  • Innovation and design
  • Indoor environmental quality

Polykar received the highest level of participation: PERFORMANCE, signifying excellence in waste management as well as the realization of awareness campaigns within the company.

Recyc-Québec, a public company mandated to promote and develop the reduction, reuse and recycling of waste in the ICI (industrial, commercial, and institutional) sector, recognizes organizations using a 3-level participation system called the ICI ON RECYCLE! award.

Polykar's compostable bags were recognized by the CEMR, or Centre of Expertise in Waste Management (Centre d’expertise sur les matières résiduelles). The CEMR is an organization whose main objective is to promote environmental product or service innovation by companies and environmental researchers. Polykar's compostable bags were recognized by the Ecosustainable Production & Design Competition of the CEMR for:

  • Life cycle management
  • Product innovation
  • Polykar’s commitment to promoting social responsibility

Polykar’s compostable bags, developed in a co-branding agreement for Canada with BASF, were launched in November 2009 and comply with the ASTM D6400 standard specifications for compostable plastics. These bags are also certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) and The United States Composting Council (USCC) and are compliant with the BNQ-9902-001 norm of the Bureau de normalisation du Québec (BNQ).
