We are delighted to inform our clients that Polykar’s new line of compostable bags won the 2010 Edition of the Ecodurable Production and Design competition. This annual competition, organized by the Centre for waste expertise in partnership with the city of Montreal, RECYC-QUÉBEC and Eco Entreprises Québec, has become a reference for the promotion of waste management issues.

The Ecodurable Production and Design competition aims to promote the creation or modification of everyday use products that respect sustainability principles while encouraging local demand for industrial designers. Polykar was named Ecodurable Laureate for the territory of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Saint-Laurent by a jury of 12 members: 11 experts in ecological design and sustainability and one representative of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Saint-Laurent. The following criteria influenced the choice of the jury:

  • The life cycle management of the compostable bag
  • Product innovation
  • Polykar’s commitment to promoting social responsibility

According to Julien Vogler, jury member and project officer for the Centre for waste expertise, “What caught the jury’s attention was that the bag is compostable and compliant to the Bureau de normalisation du Québec’s standards.” Mr. Vogler added that “the jury appreciated Polykar’s exemplary waste management (in-house recycling) as well as the fact that Polykar had obtained the ISO 14001 certification.”

This compostable bag product, developed in a co-branding agreement for Canada with BASF, was launched in November 2009 and complies with the ASTM D6400 standard specifications for compostable plastics. These bags are also certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) and The United States Composting Council (USCC) and compliant with the BNQ-9011-911 norm of the Bureau de normalisation du Québec (BNQ).

The Award was accepted by Amir Karim, Vice-President, Business Development, on behalf of the Polykar team on April 29, 2010 at the Alpha Gala organized by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Saint-Laurent.
