Packaging Development Researcher (R&D)

Job description

Reporting to the vice-president and chief technology officer, the Packaging Development Researcher focuses primarily on developing new products based on Polykar’s product portfolio including food packaging plastic films, compostable films, recyclable films and trash liner bags. He is responsible for leading and executing projects involving design, innovation, and improvement of products and manufacturing processes. He will perform all responsibilities based on required food safety regulations (BRCGS) and in compliance with ISO9001.

Responsibilities

  • To lead RD projects, including documentation of the design inputs, planning, experimentation, supervising experimental production trials, verification, validation, review, commercialization, and reporting.
  • To design experiments and provide conclusions about a process or product performance.
  • To coordinate and execute laboratory testing, including developing experimentation instructions.
  • To provide technical support to the quality control team, purchasing, operations and sales departments.
  • To work closely with sales to coordinate customer testing of experimental products and assist in field testing if necessary.
  • To develop and maintain product bill of materials, production dockets, technical data sheets and standard operating procedures.
  • To develop test methods for the evaluation of new products following applicable standards.
  • To write technical reports detailing procedures, outcomes, and observations from lab tests and trials.
  • To identify and support cost reduction opportunities and projects related to raw materials for commercial products.
  • To provide work direction, training and mentoring to quality control technicians in the lab.
  • To assist with root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions alongside the quality assurance team.
  • To support special commercial runs, to resolve problems, and quality deficiencies to optimize processes.
  • To participate in customer meetings and trade events to drive growth and keep up with product trends, channel and consumer influences, and competitive challenges.
  • Any other tasks and responsibilities based on business requirements assigned by the direct manager.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Operations management, Business administration, Engineering or any other related field, an asset.
  • 10+ years of experience in management, production or operations including personnel management, an asset.
  • 10+ years of experience in the plastics manufacturing industry.
  • Knowledge of equipment in the plastics and recycling industry, an asset.
  • Fluency in English and French is required (oral and written).
  • Great ability to manage stress and pressure.
    • B.Sc./M.Sc. degree in chemical engineering, polymer/packaging engineering, and experience in the blown film extrusion industry.
    • 2-5 years of experience in a similar role in the plastic manufacturing industry.
    • Strong technical aptitude with expertise in polymer extrusion processes and materials. A good base in polymer materials and an understanding of plastic extrusion and converting equipment.
    • Strong project and time management skills required.
    • Strong analytical thinking.
    • Strong communication skills, team player with the ability to work with various stakeholders and under pressure.
    • High proficiency level with MS Office.
    • Bilingual in French and English (written and verbal)
