Breaking Barriers in Shipping: Dolly Begum's Story at Polykar

Before most of us sip our morning coffee, Dolly Begum is already walking the Polykar plant, scanning production floors, checking inventory, and coordinating with carriers. Each day requires precision, quick thinking, and balancing multiple priorities. “I do a visual of what I have and plan my day,” she explains. “I message my carriers so the floor can be cleared for more production, then check ship requests and assign tasks based on my team’s strengths.”

Shipping at Polykar is more than moving boxes, it is the heartbeat of the company’s revenue. Every order that leaves the plant represents dollars earned. “We are like the cash register,” she says. “The more we ship, the more profitable we are. But shipping is unpredictable, it can change by the minute, and balancing everything is a real challenge.”

For Dolly, the complexity of shipping is part of what drew her to the role. Every department, from CSR, to production, to quality control, feeds into shipping. Her role is to see the big picture and make sure every piece falls into place.

Her journey at Polykar began in customer service as the sole CSR back in 2016. Within a year, she was promoted to CSR Manager, and over eight years, she developed a deep understanding of how orders move through the company. “I learned how orders, production, and shipping all connect, but after eight years, I was ready for a new challenge,” she recalls.

That challenge came in shipping. For five years, she had her eye on the department, determined to modernize and innovate. When Polykar implemented its ERP system in 2022, Dolly spent the first three months on the floor, assisting with order picking and inventory. “That hands-on experience helped me discover a real passion for shipping.”

Dolly is also breaking barriers in a traditionally male-dominated field. “It’s been my goal for years to reach this role,” she says. “Now, I’m creating new waves in the industry while helping my team grow.”

Today, she leads a team of five, soon to grow to eight, plus three material handlers. Her leadership has created growth opportunities for her team. Krikor, a second-generation Polykar employee, started in production and progressed to shipping under her guidance. Feroz, another team member, found his stride in shipping after struggling in a different role. “Since he came in, his growth has been incredible. He’s now my right-hand man.”

Dolly’s dedication reflects Polykar’s values: collaboration, innovation, and empowering employees to grow, while keeping the company’s operations running efficiently.
